The Porsche Mission E Cross Turismo Sets the Bar High for Tesla
Porsche is getting ready to take on Tesla in the world of high-performance electric vehicles. Looking at Telsa's Model S and X, it shows that its possible to build an appealing, high-performance electric vehicle that people actually want to drive. In the process,Tesla is inspiring other automakers to one-up each other. Now, Porsche is the newest automaker stepping up to raise the bar for the emerging luxury electric vehicle category.
On Tuesday at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, Porsche introduced Mission E Cross Turismo. It is the latest electric model to enter the market from the German automaker.
The Porsche Mission E Cross Turismo is an all-electric crossover wagon with a higher ground clearance. It is built on the Mission E sedan platform. This use of a shared platform is similar to the way Tesla designed the Model X, which is built on the Model S platform. Both vehicles are based on existing high-performance electric sedans.
The new Cross Turismo has an impressive range of more than 311 miles on a single charge which is on par with the Model X. However, Porsche's 800-volt charging architecture allows the Cross Turismo to charge up to 249 miles of range in just 15 minutes, something Tesla's current 400-volt Supercharger system cannot achieve.
The Cross Turismo features twin electric motors—one for each axle. The two permanent magnet synchronous motors (PSM) have an output of more than 600 hp (440 kW) allow the Mission E Cross Turismo to accelerate to 100 km/h in less than 3.5 seconds and to reach 0 to 60 mph in about 6 seconds.
In addition, the level of continuous power is unmatched by any other electric vehicle. Power is guaranteed on any surface thanks to on-demand all-wheel drive with Porsche Torque Vectoring, which automatically distributes torque to individual wheels. The Porsche is also equipped with four-wheel steering and an adjustable air suspension that can raise or lower the Cross Turismo by two inches.
In February, Porsche announced that it will spend $7.4 billion on electric mobility by 2022. Included in this spending plan was $620 million for the development of Mission E electric vehicles including the Cross Turismo.
After seeing the new Mission E Turismo, it looks like Porsche's money was well-spent.
Electra Meccanica to Produce its Three-Wheeled Solo EV in 18 Months
VANCOUVER — Electra Meccanica Vehicles (EMV) showed off its compact SOLO, a three-wheeled electric car at this year's CES in Las Vegas as a practical, inexpensive way to travel in urban areas. Now the company is speeding from concept towards production with the help of its partner Siemens.
EMV is collaborating with Siemens PLM Software and MAYA Heat Transfer Technologies Ltd. on computer aided engineering, which will enable EMV to bring its new SOLO electric vehicle to production in just 18 short months.
This video details how Electra Meccanica utilized Siemens' product lifecycle management software solutions as well as its expertise in the computer aided engineering to optimize the design for structure, thermal, flow and material composition and to maximize the overall performance of the SOLO.
Developed by Electra Meccanica, the SOLO is the first all-electric, single-seat vehicle designed to reduce congestion, air pollution and operating cost. It can achieve highway speeds and has a 100 mile range on a full charge that would cover most people's daily commuting needs, making SOLO the ideal supplementary vehicle that is fun to drive at an affordable price.

Local Motors Partners with Hinduja Tech to Built its Autonomous Olli Shuttle
Phoenix, Arizona based Local Motors has selected Michigan-based engineering service provider, Hinduja Tech Inc., as the latest partner for continued development of the world's first co-created, self-driving vehicle, Olli.
Olli is a battery-powered, autonomous shuttle designed for urban areas, corporate and college campuses, urban business centers, and neighborhoods providing safe, efficient, emissions-free transportation. The autonomous driving system is powered by IBM's Watson.
The autonomous Olli shuttle first debuted as a proof of concept on June 16, 2016, and is launching pilot programs which will pick up passengers beginning in the Spring of 2018. Renault-Nissan Alliance Denies Talks to Buy Out French State
Amid rumors of a possible merger, Renault SA and Nissan Motor Co. alliance denied a report that the companies are in talks to buy the French state out of its holding in the nation's automaker in a step toward a possible merger.
"Any discussion about a share transaction involving Renault, Nissan or the French state is pure speculation," Jonathan Adashek, a spokesman for the alliance, said in an email.
Renault pared gains after climbing as much 13 percent following the Reuters report of talks with Nissan and government officials about the Japanese automaker purchasing most of the French state's 15 percent stake.
Carlos Ghosn, the chairman of the alliance between Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors Corp., has been relinquishing some day-to-day control over the companies to focus on strengthening their ties so that they'll be preserved over the long term. While a merger is one option toward that effort, this would require the approval of the French and Japanese governments, he said in an interview last week.
Ghosn gave up the CEO role at Nissan last year. Renault last month named Frenchman Thierry Bollore chief operating officer, positioning the 54-year-old as Ghosn's second-in-command and likely successor.
After engineering turnarounds at both Renault and Nissan, Ghosn has overseen a rebound at Mitsubishi Motors from a Japan fuel-economy testing scandal that threatened its viability. He orchestrated Nissan's purchase of a controlling stake in Mitsubishi Motors and has been working on more closely integrating the company with the alliance.
A merger of alliance partners may not be necessary, said Maryann Keller, an independent auto analyst in Stamford, Connecticut. The auto industry has a history of failed attempts to combine companies. "You can collaborate without ownership," Keller said. "It's probably the best way."
The French government doesn't want to relinquish its equity ownership because it gives them leverage to maintain Renault jobs, said Richard Hilgert, a Morningstar analyst in Chicago.
