In the U.S., the Nissan LEAF is a quirky, five-door hatchback. But in China, the electric car's underpinnings sit beneath a familiar-looking sedan, called the Sylphy Zero Emission.

The Sylphy is the same car as the North American Nissan Sentra. It displays the ho-hum sedan's white bread design both inside and out. But Nestled underneath the sheet metal of the Zero Emission model, you'll find a synchronous electric motor along with a lithium-ion battery pack. Just like the Nissan LEAF.

A zero emissons Sylphy aka Sentra isn't listed on the Nissan North American website because, well, the car won't be coming to the states. And also, because it's the product of a joint venture between the global automaker and its subsidiary, Dongfeng Nissan.

Powertrain specifications for the Sylphy Zero Emission are much like that of the LEAF. The sedan is propelled by an 80 kW (254 NM) permanent magnet synchronous motor paired with a 38 kWh lithium-ion battery. Range is listed as 338 km (210 miles). Charging is accomplished via either a 50 kW fast charger or standard 6.6 kW charger. Like the Nissan LEAF, the connection port is located at the front of the vehicle.

Similar to the North American Sentra, the Sylphy Zero Emission features a range of available amenities, such as the Nissan Connect touchscreen infotainment display. The system offers connectivity and navigation, along with the ability to locate a charging station. Users will also benefit from the optional onboard Wi-Fi. A full range of driver assistance technologies – such as automatic braking, lane departure warning and more – are offered through the Nissan i-Safety suite.

On September 25th, China welcomed the Sylphy Zero Emission at an official launch party held in Hainan, the first Chinese province committed to having only alternative energy vehicles on the road by 2030.  Approximately 670 journalists, government officials and enthusiasts attended the event.

"Yesterday was the Moon Festival, which means family reunion in China," said Airton Cousseau, managing director of DFN. "Today, I'm pleased to have all of you here to join the family of Sylphy. Sylphy is one of the best-selling models in the Chinese market, and today's launch of Sylphy Zero Emission will reinforce the new energy vehicle lineup for Nissan in China."

"In the past 12 years, 2.6 million Chinese families have chosen Sylphy as their family car," said Hao Chen, deputy managing director of DFN. "We believe that the introduction of Sylphy Zero Emission will further fulfill Chinese consumers' needs for electric vehicle in auto market."

The Sylphy Zero Emissions is the first model to debut as part of the Nissan Intelligent Mobility mission in China. Through the program, the Japanese automaker hopes to promote three core areas of innovation: Intelligent Driving, Intelligent Power, and Intelligent integration. As for Dongfeng, it plans to introduce twenty new electrified vehicles in across its Nissan, Infiniti, Venucia and Dongfeng brands.

Since June, the Sylphy Zero Emissions has been available in Beijing through a pre-sale. Now, it's available to the rest of China.
