GAC Unveils the Electrified Aion S

The EV manufacturing space is heating up, with several companies looking to dethrone Tesla from the top spot. China-based automaker GAC is one of those businesses that aims to directly compete against the automotive brand. 

At the 2018 Guangzhou International Automobile Exhibition, GAC showcased the Aion S – a cutting-edge addition to the company's EV lineup. Capable of matching the Tesla Model 3's drag coefficient, the unit offers more than 300 miles of range and L2 driving assistance capabilities (same level offered by BMW).

According to GAC, the Aion S will be available in 2019. Production for the EV will also start next year. Equipped with an aerodynamic exterior, the unit takes on a very sleek design and robust LED headlights. When it comes to autonomous driving features, the Aion S provides automated parking assistance, cruise assistance and traffic congestion assistance.

L2 autonomous driving enables drivers to remove their hands from the steering wheel for short periods of time, as the car performs various maneuvers. Compared to L3 autonomous driving, this level does not allow drivers to conduct other tasks while in driverless mode. L4 would allow drivers to take naps during commutes.

"Later this year, GAC NE will open a new manufacturing factory for L4 automatic driving testing. In the era of e-car 2.0, GAC NE is committed to creating world-class e-cars with the most advanced technologies and premium services," said the company.

For car-sharing applications, GAC revealed three compact EV models capable of seating two passengers. Each model is designed to address the needs of specific types of demographics. For example, the 2US EV contains a rotating seat base, enabling senior citizens and people with medical disabilities to enter and exit the car with ease.

Covered with a fur-like interior, the 2U EV is a unit suitable for female passengers. The 2ALL model is a durable EV recommended for car-sharing activities.

EV Industrial Park

GAC is positioning itself to become a strong contender in the EV sector. The automaker is currently busy developing facilities at a $5.6 billion industrial park. Located at Guangzhou's Panyu district, one of the plants will be ready by the end of this year, which will be used to manufacture EVs and driverless cars.

At full capacity, the building can produce a total of 200,000 units per year. This annual target is considerably higher than the company's sales target of 20,000 EVs by 2020.

"In the first ten months of this year, the cumulative sales volume of GAC NE reached 13,928 units, an increase of 291% year-on-year, continuously refreshing the records of its own. It has become the world's leading and socially trusted green and intelligent mobile value creator," highlighted GAC.

"Besides, GAC is proudly announced that it is the first manufacturer to apply solar energy to mass production vehicles in the world."

GAC has made significant moves to become a leading EV brand. The startup plans to release seven new EV models by 2023. Furthermore, it has formed strategic partnerships with the following auto suppliers: Aisin Seiki, Michelin, Continental and Faurecia.
