Polestar Engineered XC60 and V60 PHEVs Added to Volvo's Lineup
Earlier this week, Volvo cars USA announced it would soon add the 2020 XC60 T8 and V68 T8 models to its lineup. The addition of these models which have been engineered by Polestar, is part of Volvo's plan to grow its plug-in hybrid sales in the U.S.
This will be the first time that Volvo will offer a PHEV wagon in North America.
The powertrain of new models are boosted by software that increases the efficiency of the electric motors, increasing the torque and power being sent to the rear wheels. This enhancement is similar to what we saw earlier in the limited production 2019 S60 T8.
Volvo has confirmed that the new V60 and XC60 models will come with the company's all-wheel-drive system as standard. The total power output of the new models has been enhanced to 415 HP with 494 lb-ft of torque, as compared to the figures of the standard S60 T8 model which delivers 400 HP and 472 lb-ft.
To improve the handling of the new vehicles, Volvo has commissioned Sweden-based automotive parts company Ohlins to install gold-painted 6 piston brake calipers, which enhances the stopping power of the new models. Other upgrades include new struts.
Aesthetics of the two cars have also been overhauled and feature gloss black exterior trim accents and Polestar's gold seat-belt, which distinguish the new models from the Swedish automaker's standard offerings.
Last year, Volvo only built 20 units of the Polestar engineered 2019 S60. The car sold out just minutes after its introduction and was only available through the company's subscription service "Care by Volvo." The subscription costs $1,100, which includes insurance and maintenance.
So far, Volvo has not disclosed how many units of the new Polestar engineered models will be introduced in North America, but said that in comparison, customers will be able to gain access to these 2020 models more easily.
With escalating competition from other European carmakers including Audi, Jaguar and Mercedes Benz, if Volvo does not find an economically feasible way to introduce more electrified offerings, it might risk washing out of the space altogether.
