Here's Everything You Need to Know About the Compact 2020 Honda E Prototype
Honda's Urban EV concept first made its debut at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show and has since gone on to become one of the most highly anticipated electric cars in the recent years. The Japanese automaker managed to generate substantial hype for its upcoming small electric car the 2020 Honda E prototype.
The production-spec version will not likely be as artisan as the initial concept, but the prototype, which made an appearance during the recent 2019 Geneva Motor Show, did not disappoint attendees.
Even though Honda insists on calling this production-spec version a ‘prototype', the company did confirm that most of the components on the car will remain unchanged except for small bits like the dashboard plastics and infotainment system.
The small electric car will feature an asynchronous electric motor powered by a 35.5 kWh battery pack. Honda says the electric powertrain is rated at 148 horsepower producing 221 lb-ft of torque. The Honda E can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in around 8 seconds and will offer 124 miles of all-electric driving range.
The 2020 Honda E Prototype will be available in a rear-wheel-drive setup up.
The car features what Honda calls its simple "quiet" design, which is both minimalistic and futuristic with tasteful and subtle integration of 1970 Honda design references.
One such futuristic feature is the rear-view camera system which replaces the traditional mirrors. The designers have also concealed the various driver assist systems behind the EV's black nose panel.
The E prototype is just over 12 feet long. With these compact dimensions, its no surprise that the car will offer limited storage. However, in order to make the cabin more roomy for passengers, Honda's engineers designed the lithium-ion battery pack to sit low in the EV platform and the electric motor is mounted underneath the hood.
The cars project leader, Kohei Hitome reasons that this will improve the handling characteristics of the car by enhancing traction and maintaining a lower center of gravity.
Honda also confirmed that the 2020 prototype will be sold at a premium price tag estimated to be somewhere around the $45,000 mark, so it will be more expensive than a base Tesla Model 3.
