The  275 Mile Range Polestar 2 EV Makes its U.S. Debut in San Francisco

In June 2017, Swedish automaker Volvo Cars and its parent company Chinese automaker Geely announced the Polestar luxury electric performance brand. Just over two years later, the much-awaited Polestar 2 EV made its North American debut in San Francisco.

The Polestar 2 is the first all-electric offering to come from the electric brand Polestar and the vehicle debuts were held in four different cities across the U.S. The public are invited to attend these events, which are designed to promote the Polestar brand and also where people get a closer look at the upcoming performance EV.

Interested buyers can also reserve their Polestar 2 and one of these roadshows.

Initially, Polestar vehicles will only be sold out of San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, and Seattle. Later this year, three Canadian cities including Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal will join the list.

The Head of Polestar Americas, Gregor Hembrough disclosed that the bulk of reservations for the Polestar 2 came from North America, adding that interest is quite high in the U.S. and Canada. Hembrough said that he expects the Polestar 2 to receive a positive response from the general public and expects that electric car buyers will welcome Polestar's first all-electric performance car.

Prices for the Polestar 2 start at around $63,000. This price is exclusively reserved for the Launch Edition models. Deliveries are expected to begin sometime in the second quarter of 2020.

The Polestar 2 resembles an SUV and will be offered as a mid-size, five-door fastback which will feature an all-wheel-drive setup powered by a 72 kWh actively cooled lithium-ion battery pack delivering around 275 miles of all-electric driving range.

The Polestar 2 will be a more affordable alternative to its hybrid limited-edition sibling—the $150,000, 600 horsepower Polestar 1 super-hybrid car.

However, Polestar intends to produce only 500 units of the niche Polestar 1, but if demand for the car exceeds expectations, the company confirmed that the Polestar 1 will be made available for an additional two model years. 

Polestar will begin deliveries of Polestar 1 in the U.S. and Canada later this year.

Polestar will offer its more affordable Polestar 2 without using a traditional network of dealerships. Instead, Polestar will take a new approach and market a subscription model as the primary offer. The cars will be offered with an all-inclusive single monthly payment to take the hassle out of traditional vehicle ownership.

The monthly fee will include everything from maintenance, insurance, roadside assistance, as well as pick-up and delivery services that will redefine the owner experience. All orders and transactions are completed entirely online.

This online approach will be complemented by stand-alone retail spaces called "Polestar Spaces". These Spaces will be located in urban areas where people gather and where customers can experience the Polestar brand by meeting and talking with product experts.

Interested buyers can examine the Polestar 2 up close and have the opportunity to take the vehicle for a test drive.

By mid-2020, Polestar plans to have open up to 60 Spaces around the world in major metropolitan centers to support the key launch markets for the brand. The first Polestar Space to open is in Oslo, Norway.

Online reservation for Polestar 2 started early this year and reservation holders were invited to San Francisco Museum of Modern Art to get an up-close and personal look at the brands first ever 100% electric offering. 

Interested buyers can reserve one and build their own using Polestar's online configurator.
