All You Need to Know About the 900 HP Electric Ford Mustang Lithium
In January 2018, Maryland-based Genovation Cars brought an all-electric GXE Corvette to CES in Las Vegas. It seems as though Ford Motor Co decided to take a page out of Genovation's book and rolled up at the 2019 SEMA auto show with an all-electric pony car of its own, the 900 horsepower Mustang Lithium.
The Mustang Lithium is powered by a 671-kilowatt electric powertrain and is a product of Ford's partnership with Websato.
Unlike the Genovation GXE Corvette which was slated for a 75-unit limited production run, the electric Mustang is only a technological showcase and Ford has not yet commented on whether or not the electric sports car will ever enter production.
Ford has elaborate plans to electrify its lineup, which will also be updated to include more sport utility vehicles, Ford is axing most of its sedans, with the exception of the iconic Mustang. An electrified version of Ford Mustang is also expected to join the company's lineup at some point.
Powering the Ford Mustang lithium is a Phi-Power electric motor mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. The high-performance rear-wheel-drive powertrain produces 900 horsepower and over 1,000 lb-ft of torque. Energizing the electric powertrain is an 800-volt battery pack.
Ford has not disclosed any other specs for the Mustang Lithium, including the EV's range, top speed, 0 to 60 mph time or estimated price.
For comparison, the Genovation GXE Corvette was also powered by an 800-volt architecture, but only managed to produce 800 hp and 718 lb-ft of peak torque. Still, the GXE Corvette happens to be the world's fastest street-legal electric supercar and has achieved speeds of over 210 mph. Genovation claims its Corvette can even hit a 220 mph mark, given the right conditions.
The Mustang Lithium's hood has two windows showing the high-tech powertrain underneath.
It's still unclear how the more powerful and torquier motor in the Mustang Lithium will perform against the GXE Corvette, given the same conditions especially because Ford has refrained from disclosing the weight of the Lithium.
Ford did reveal though how the Mustang is able to handle all of that extra power. Ford equipped Mustang Lithium with performance half shafts and a Super 8.8 Torsen limited-slip differential. The car runs on a set of grippy Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires. Ford also offers Ford Performance's track package in the electric Mustang.
Ford is currently set to unveil its Mustang-inspired electric SUV on Nov 17 and recently released a teaser image of the upcoming electric utility vehicle, which according to rumors, will be introduced under the "Mach E" nameplate.
