Bollinger Motors Reveals the World's First Electric Class-3 Commercial Truck Platform

Electric truck startup Bollinger Motors is among the new crop of startups developing battery-powered trucks for the commercial and consumer market. Unlike many electric vehicle startup building luxury models, Bollinger is designing its electric trucks to be, rugged, utilitarian and customizable for many different uses.

The Detroit-based company unveiled today its latest electric truck platform it calls "E-Chassis." The patent-pending E-Chassis is the world's first and only Class 3 electric platform – and it wasdesigned with commercial applications and versatility in mind. The company's E-Chassis has been designed to offer a high level of utility for the commercial electric truck market.

Class-3 trucks are designated as "medium trucks" and weigh between 10,001-14,000 lbs. Examples of Class-3 trucks are the Ford F-450 pickup and GMC Sierra 3500.

The Bollinger Motors E-Chassis includes a 120 kWh battery pack as standard, although an optional 180 kWh battery pack is available for longer range and more power. Like Bollinger's fully-electric B1 SUV and B2 pickup, the platform features dual motors, all-wheel drive, all-terrain capabilities, as well as a 5000-lb payload capacity.

The E-Chassis is the same platform shared with Bollinger's B1 Sport Utility Truck and the B2 Pickup. Its also versalite can accommodate a wide variety of truck bodies, so its versatile enough for Bollinger to expand its model lineup to accommodate commercial customers' needs.

"When we first built our Class 3 B1, we knew there was a commercial aspect to the platform," said CEO Robert Bollinger. "Not only cab-on-chassis, but entirely new truck bodies can fit on our E-Chassis, and help propel the world to all-electric that much faster."

Boosted by the success of Tesla, interest in fully-electric cars and trucks is growing. 

Bollinger, founded in 2015, is among the new crop of electric truck makers, including Rivian and Nikola Motor Company, that are introducing electric models that promise to be more powerful and versatile than conventional internal combustion engine powered trucks. Bollinger aims to take on General Motors, Ford and Dodge by offering more utilitarian electric trucks that are more like the original Hummer H1.

Bollinger's B1 and B2 battery-powered trucks are dubbed as "sport utility trucks" and more closely resemble a Jeep Wrangler or Land Rover Defender. You won't find metallic paint jobs, leather seats, touchscreen displays or faux luxury interiors in Bollinger's trucks like other SUVs or pickups.


The First Electric Truck Chassis with Portal Gear Lifts

The E-Chassis also features Portal gear lifts, which are normally found on rugged offroad vehicles or on military vehicles.

The Portal gear hub is a set of gears mounted at the end of the axle that connects the axle to drive the wheel hub. It allows the axle to be placed higher in the chassis and the wheel hub can be mounted below the axle's center line. The setup increases ground clearance as the axle can be positioned higher above the wheels. 

Even though the axles are higher than a conventional 4x4 setup, the position of the batteries in the E-Chassis still gives the platform a very low center of gravity. The fully customizable E-Chassis can be configured for a variety of uses with or without the portal gear hubs.

The E-Chassis also features standard safety systems such as ABS brakes, electronic traction and stability control, hydraulic power steering, hydro-pneumatic self-leveling suspension, an independent suspension and a 5-15 kw on-board charger/inverter for power tools or other accessories.

The E-Chassis will be manufactured alongside Bollinger's B1 and B2 trucks and made available for commercial use in 2021, the company said.
