2022 Ford E-Transit Arrives With 126 Miles of Range
Unlike a lot of other traditional automakers, Ford believes that having a bunch of electric commercial vehicles is the best way to introduce electrified vehicles in the U.S. The first vehicle in this commercial charge is the 2022 Ford E-Transit. After a lot of teasers, Ford finally unveiled the electric van in its entirety. Obviously, the electric powertrain in the E-Transit will bring lower maintenance costs, a bunch of interior space, and immediate grunt around town, but the van also has a few other tricks up its sleeve.
Just Enough Range
The biggest piece of news for the E-Transit is its electric powertrain. The commercial van will come with a 67-kWh lithium-ion battery pack that has a range of up to 126 miles. Up against Tesla's batteries, which provide its vehicles with 400 miles of range, 126 miles might not sound like a lot. But Ford has given the E-Transit fast-charging capability, so that on a 115-plus-kilowatt DC fast charger, the van can get 30 miles of range in just 10 minutes. If you have 15 minutes to spend, you'll get 45 miles of range back. Ford will also include a Mobile Charger with the E-Transit that can be plugged into a normal 120-volt outlet or into a 240-volt outlet for faster charging.
Commercial users require a large cargo area from their vans, so Ford made sure to pack the E-Transit's battery pack low in the body. Ford's engineers also developed a different independent rear suspension to make sure available cargo space is kept to a maximum. Without a traditional internal combustion engine at the front of the van, engineers decided to mount the vehicle's full-size spare underneath the hood.
The 2022 E-Transit will be offered with an electric motor that produces 266 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. Commercial vans aren't known for their performance, but more for their towing and payload capacity. While the figures are just preliminary ones, payload capacity is rated at a maximum of 4,290 pounds.
More Than Just An EV
One of the things that made the Transit van so popular was its wide range of configurations. That's something that will carry over for the 2022 E-Transit, as the commercial vehicle will be offered in three roof heights and three body lengths. Chassis cab and cutaway models will also be available. From the looks of things, it looks like the only body style that won't be available for the E-Transit is a passenger van.
It's not just the powertrain or the available body styles, but the E-Transit will also be available with a variety of connected-vehicle services. The E-Transit will come with a standard 4G LTE modem that gives users the ability to unlock available data subscriptions and connectivity to help companies manage and optimize the efficiency of their fleet. Users will also be able to explore vehicle data enhancements from Ford Telematics and Ford Data Services via Ford Commercial Solutions.
On the tech front, the E-Transit will feature Ford's SYNC 4 infotainment system, a 12-inch touchscreen, could-enhanced navigation, voice recognition, over the air updates, and Ford Co-Pilot360.
The new E-Transit is so much more than just an electric commercial van, it's a high-tech work van for the future. The vehicle will arrive at dealerships in the middle of next year with a starting price of around $45,000. The van will be offered in multiple markets, including North America, New Zealand, and Europe.
