Hyundai Reveals Specs for the Upcoming 2022 Tucson SUV
South Korean automaker Hyundai is advancing its electrification strategy with extreme zeal. The company recently unveiled its upcoming eco-focused lineup that will hit the market in 2022.
With the popularity of crossovers and SUVs at an all-time high, it's not surprising that most of the upcoming Hyundai models sport high-riding body styles. Tucson sales have grown roughly 250% since 2014, so its an important vehicle in the company's lineup.
Now the company has confirmed that its 2022 Tucson SUV will offer buyers three options, a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), conventional hybrid and an internal combustion engine model.
The Hyundai Tucson PHEV will be powered by a 13.8 kWh battery pack, which the company claims will deliver 70 MPGe of fuel economy. Customers can recharge their depleted battery packs to full capacity in less than 2 hours using the Tucson's 7.2 kW onboard charger.
Hyundai has also confirmed that both the plug-in hybrid and conventional hybrid versions of the new Tucson will come equipped with the company's HTRAC all-wheel-drive system as standard.
Traditional 4-wheel drive systems were intended for off-road conditions and generally not very fuel efficient. But let's face it, its unlikely that consumers will do much off-roading in their Tuscons. Hyundai's HTRAC all-wheel drive system is designed to combine the capabilities of a 4WD system with the performance and full efficiency of front-wheel drive for everyday driving.
The drivetrain of the 2022 Tucson PHEV will feature a 1.6-liter turbo-charged gas engine producing 180 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of maximum torque.
The four-cylinder engine comes mated to a 6-speed automatic gearbox and s 66.9 kW electric motor that produces 224 lb-ft of peak torque that results in a total combined power output of 261 horsepower.
The electric motor is paired with the transmission and helps enhance the SUV's overall performance. The Tucson PHEV will also get a battery-only driving mode and will offer 28 miles of purely electric driving range.
The upcoming Hyundai Tucson will feature updates to the interior and exterior.
Hyundai employed its next-gen design language to style the all-new Tucson, and therefore, the front-end of the SUV is dominated by a large grille that houses a multi-module LED light cluster. The side profile of the SUV flaunts flared fenders that have been sculpted in a geometric design.
Like many modern electrified offerings, the rear-end of the 2022 Tucson gets a large LED light bar that runs across the width of the tailgate.
Inside the cabin, we find that the dashboard of the Tucson is dominated by a large 8-inch touchscreen infotainment display that comes equipped with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity.
Hyundai also offers a panoramic glass sunroof and the company's all-new vent technology that disperses air more gently.
The Hyundai Tucson is one of the company's most popular nameplates in the U.S. The company claims it will launch the new Tucson's PHEV models in the summer of 2021. The gas-powered version will arrive a bit sooner, arriving at U.S. Hyundai dealers in the spring of 2021.
