Roughly 4,500 Ford Mustang Mach-E Buyers Are Facing Delays
Ford's track record with releasing new vehicles is iffy. The Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator were marred by production issues, which delayed their availability. The automaker was certainly trying to keep things on a better note with its Tesla-fighting Mustang Mach-E. Unfortunately, things aren't looking up. In January, Ford stated that it would be delaying "several hundred" Mach-E models because of quality checks. Recently, Ford shed some more light on just how large those delays are, and it's not just a few hundred vehicles.
Thousands Of Customers Are Waiting
According to the Detroit Free Press, Ford confirmed that roughly 4,500 Mustang Mach-E owners are facing delays for their electric crossovers to be delivered. That's a much higher number than the hundreds that Ford initially said would be delivered late. The delays are still being caused by quality checks that will take an average of 30 days, but the automaker's "team is working to reduce that time," Ford spokeswoman Emma Bergg told the outlet.
Of the 4,500 Mach-E SUVs that were initially delayed, Ford claims that it has delivered 1,500 of them, confirmed Mike Levine, North America product communications manager. Still, Ford isn't rushing to get these SUVs out to owners, as the automaker is looking to retain its quality above all else. "Quality is a top priority," said Bergg. "Delivery timing of approximately 4,500 Mustang Mach-Es is being extended as part of our commitment to deliver a quality vehicle to customers."
Giving Buyers Compensation
Ford understands that Mustang Mach-E buyers have been waiting a long time for the EVs, so it's ready to compensate them. Bergg told the outlet that Ford will provide roughly 150 customers with $1,000 toward the purchase of a Mustang Mach-E. These customers have all waited more than one delay because of quality checks. Additionally, customers will receive an extra 250-kWh of free charging via the automaker's FordPass Charging Network. That's double what owners would typically receive. The charging offer applies to all 4,500 customers that have been affected by the delays, as well as the 1,500 people that have received their Mach-Es.
The American automaker has not specified what issue it's facing that's causing the delays. At the moment, all Ford is saying is that the delays are due to additional quality checks.
Ford began delivering its electric SUV at the end of last year, just on schedule. This January, some customers took to the Internet to report that they received documents that stated delays would stretch well into March. It appears as if those initial documents were correct. The Mustang Mach-E has received favorable reviews and looks like a strong competitor to Tesla. The last thing Ford needs is quality issues to stop its SUV from being a great option in the EV scene
