 Quick Comparison: The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning, GMC Hummer EV and Rivian R1T

The electrification plans of Ford Motor Co are making an impressive headway. The automaker recently unveiled the Lightning Pro, a commercial version of the all-new F-150 electric pickup. The company was even commended by Tesla's Chief Executive Elon Musk for its progress in the electrification space.

Ford will launch its new F-150 Lighting lineup in the first half of next year. By the end of 2022, other electric vehicles like the Hummer EV and Rivian R1T electric pickup will also be on sale. But the three companies have shared enough information about their upcoming electric trucks to draw a quick comparison. Let's take a look.

Price

With prices starting at just $39,974 for Ford's 2022 F-150 Lightning Pro, it's the most competitively priced of the three EVs. The R1T from electric vehicle startup Rivian will start at $67,500, making it the second most affordable offering. While the Hummer EV from GM's truck division GMC, will cost much more with a $112,000 sticker price.

It's worth noting that GMC will initially introduce the most expensive variant of the Hummer EV, and more affordable versions of the electric truck will join the lineup afterwards. 

The F-150 Lightning and Rivian R1T will also qualify for the $7,500 federal EV tax credit, making them a bit more affordable.

Power and Performance

Ford's F-150 Lightning's dual-motor entry-level variant will produce a maximum power output of 426 hp. Customers can also opt for the more capable Extended Range version of the Lightning, which will bump up the max power output to 563 hp and torque to 775 lb-ft. 

The extended range version of the F-150 Lightning is $10,000 more expensive than the standard model, but enables the truck to accelerate from 0 to 60 MPH in less than 4 seconds.

The power output of the Rivian R1T pickup is rated at 754 HP and 826 lb-ft respectively. The R1T's quad-motor setup allows it to complete the 0 to 60 MPH run in just three seconds, according to Rivian. 

Both the R1T and the GMC Hummer EV share the same 0 to 60 acceleration time of three seconds, even though Hummer's most powerful variant will produce 1,000 hp with 11,500 lb-ft of torque.

Practicality and Payload

The Rivian R1T is the most efficient of the three electric trucks with a range of up to 400 miles. While GM claims that its Hummer EV will deliver up to 350 miles of range, which leaves Ford's F-150 Lightning in last place. Even when equipped with a larger battery pack, the Lightning will only offer roughly 300 miles of range. 

Ford revealed that F-150 Lightning will be able to tow up to 10,000 pounds, which is second only to Rivian's R1T with its 11,000 lbs towing capacity. GM has not announced the Hummer EV's towing capacity yet, but its expected to be equally as impressive.

The Rivian R1T will be available this summer, beating out legacy automakers Ford and GM in the race to deliver an electric truck to market.
