2023 Toyota bZ4X Officially Unveiled With 250 Miles of Range
We've seen the all-new Toyota bZ4X two times before. The first time was in prototype form and the second time was the Japanese version that had a funky yoke-style steering wheel. Now, is the third time. But this time, Toyota's ready to finally showcase the U.S. version of the 2023 Toyota bZ4X. It arrives with a competitive amount of range and will go on sale in the middle of 2022.
bZ4X Coming In 2022
The bZ4X made its official debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show earlier this week. While some vehicles change a lot when going from a concept to going on sale, that isn't the case with the bZ4X. It looks nearly identical to the concept we saw earlier in June. Compared to current vehicles in Toyota's lineup, the bZ4X is close in size to the RAV4.
On the powertrain front, the bZ4X will be available in both front- and all-wheel-drive configurations. The front-wheel-drive model comes with a single electric motor at the front that's rated at 201 horsepower. All-wheel-drive models add a second motor onto the rear axle for a combined output of 215 horsepower. A 64-kWh lithium-ion battery pack is included with the front-wheel-drive bZ4X, while all-wheel-drive cars have a 66-kWh pack.
When it comes to range, the front-wheel-drive bZ4X is the model to get. In the XLE trim, the bZ4X can travel up to 250 miles on a single charge. Toyota hasn't provided information on the all-wheel-drive model's range yet, but we expect the SUV to be able to travel around 200 miles.
How The bZ4X Compares
These figures put the bZ4X in line with options like the Chevrolet Bolt EUV, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Kona Electric, Kia Niro EV, and Volkswagen ID.4. Unfortunately, we still don't know how much the bZ4X will cost when it goes on sale. Prices should start somewhere around $36,000, which would make the bZ4X competitive for the SUV scene.
Just like the Toyota GR86 and Subaru BRZ sports cars, the bZ4X was jointly developed with Subaru. The SUV rides on Toyota's e-TNGA platform, but utilizes Subaru's X-mode all-wheel-drive system. The latter helps the bZ4X in low-traction conditions as it can control each wheel individually. Subaru's Grip Control system, which is basically off-road cruise control is also available on all-wheel-drive models.
Being similar in size to the RAV4, we expect the bZ4X to be equally as spacious on the inside if not larger. The yoke-style steering wheel we saw on the Japanese model won't be available when the bZ4X first goes on sale, but Toyota could consider using it down the road. Unlike other electric cars, the SUV won't have a front trunk.
Production of the 2023 Toyota bZ4X will start near the middle of next year, with the first models arriving shortly after. From what we see, the vehicle is certainly an exciting way for Toyota to enter the electric SUV scene. With the bZ4X and the Subaru Solterra being nearly identical vehicles, we expect to see a lot of the same specs for that SUV.
